Biden has governed well, but he has campaigned inconsistently, top say the least. He deserves to win a referendum on his accomplishments, but he will not get it. More than 8 in 10 Americans say he is too old to be an effective president. We have other potential standard bearers who would not be burdened by Biden’s negatives. Instantly the dynamics would change again, making Trump the underperforming candidate who is too old. In this close head-to-head race Biden’s support is shrinking. The more he works at improving the more he loses votes and respect. Telling the American people they should have greater sympathy for an old man is not a winning argument. Biden’s frailty is what made it possible for Trump to lie his way through the debate, lie his way through his campaign and prepare himself to lie his way through a four year term. If ever there were a Republican nominee that needs to be challenged by an articulate and forceful Democrat this is the race. Joe Biden is an American hero, but he is not the man for the urgent challenge at hand.
